- We have experienced a similar problem here in the Tampa Bay area. My
- current client is constantly looking for qualified people. They are a
- rather large company and they are willing to pay rates which are consistent
- with the local market. Just about every job shop in the area keeps
- submitting resume's, but most of what we see is crap.
-
- When we do find a resume' that looks decent, we do a phone screen. I am
- amazed at the number of people who will put whatever buzz words they can
- think of on their resume'. Do they actually believe that nobody will ask
- them any questions about these subjects?
-
- We have current requirements for C++, Object Oriented, Client server,
- Sybase, Unix, MS-Windows programmers.
-
- I remember a recent candidate whose resume' looked really good. It had all
- of the things we wanted. So, we arranged for a phone screen. When we asked
- "what's an example of an object", he couldn't think of one. When we asked
- several Sybase questions, he said that it had been a while and he'd have to
- refer to the manuals. When we asked him general questions about Client
- server and object oriented development, his answers were vague and sometimes
- confusing. It was apparent that this person didn't have a clue as to what he
- claimed to be.
-
- We had one fellow who decided that our rates were too low. Well, I remember
- when I moved to Florida after spending 2 years in Boston. I took a 20% pay
- cut. However, I find that I have more disposable income than I ever did up
- north. Some people just don't realize that money is relative.
-
- Well, we keep looking and hoping to find some more qualified people.
- Hopefully they will realize that not only is the work a challenge, but
- the rates are good as well.
-
- If you find anyone, please have them drop me a line and I will do likewise.
-
- Regards,
- Steve.
